For the third consecutive year, Super Chevy Magazine, in conjunction with the top automotive aftermarket manufacturers, is once again building an old school classic hot rod on behalf of the men and women who have served in the Unites States Armed Forces. In Project American Heroes III, the car of choice will be a 1970 Chevelle with an LS-series engine, a tricked out suspension, a killer wheel and tire combination and the all-new TCI® 6x Six-Speed Automatic Transmission.
Year after year, Project American Heroes restores an old school classic with the most modern technology in the aftermarket. And the 6x certainly lives up to that standard. With fully programmable shifting and six forward gears (2.97, 2.23, 1.57, 1.18, 1.00, 0.75), the 6x Six-Speed is designed to provide any Chevy Small Block, Big Block or GM LS engine with rapid acceleration and improved fuel economy at cruising speeds.

The building of this year’s Project American Heroes is already underway at Route 66 Motorsports, and each step of the process will be chronicled in an upcoming issue of Super Chevy magazine. Once the vehicle is completed in just a few short months it will go on a whirlwind publicity tour at some of the industry’s major events, including the 2009 SEMA show. The car is then slated for sale at the Palm Beach Barrett Jackson auction with proceeds being donated to the Armed Forces Foundation to be used for US veterans.

Since the birth of the new 6x Six-Speed Automatic Transmission from TCI®, there has been a demand for new manual shifting alternatives, including other types of transmissions. With that in mind, engineers at TCI® recently developed a new line of Outlaw™ Shifters that feature an integrated two-button design to improve shifting and eliminate the hassle of running wires or spiral cords from the steering wheel or the need for a custom steering wheel for a paddle shifter.
In addition to less hassle, the durable, military grade buttons located on these shifters ensure instant engagement, allowing for improved gear transitions. These contoured handle shifters are comfortable, easy-to-use and install, and include the cover, cable and all hardware needed for proper installation. When it comes to GM LS performance, there are a host of big power adders for street/strip applications. But once some of these power-adding extras have been included, other OEM components tend to suffer. Too often, the factory starter can’t handle the power it takes to fire up a motor with higher compression or it simply won’t fit with aftermarket headers. That’s where the all-new TCI® LS-Series Permanent Magnet Starter comes into play.
For GM LS applications with stock exhaust or aftermarket headers, the new TCI® starter features 12 different clocking positions to allow for increased oil pan clearance and a lightweight, compact design for easier mounting. The LS-Series Permanent Magnet Starter also utilizes a 6:1 gear reduction to provide more cranking power over the factory setup, thereby giving you the ability to easily turn over engines with much higher compression ratios. New planetary set from TCI® reduces starting line spin commonly found in high horsepower turbo, supercharged & nitrous injected GM TH400 drag racing applications
When it comes to high horsepower and limited tire size in drag race applications where the more durable GM TH400 transmission is needed, tire spin has always been an issue. Turbocharged, supercharged and nitrous injected engines can simply product too much power for the standard GM TH400 2.48 1st/1.48 2nd gear ratios. To counter this problem, engineers at TCI® have developed a 6-pinion planetary set that improves take-off power and maximizes racing performance by decreasing the starting line gear ratio by 15 percent to 2.10 1st/1.40 2nd.
This unique planetary set features a 6-pinion rear carrier for increased load capacity and longevity (load capacity increased as much as 17 percent). The higher first gear ratio decreases the intensity of the initial launch for reduced tire spin. In addition, the heavy-duty planetary construction is a CNC-machined billet carrier that provides a more concentric gearing system for improved performance and bullet proof durability.
With the ability to decrease tire spin, starting line traction is maximized, making this planetary set a must have for high horsepower drag racing applications, especially those utilizing turbocharged, supercharged or heavily nitrous injected engines.
